Shri A.L.N. Rao after graduating from Osmania University, Hyderabad in B.E.(Electrical) joined Bhabha Atomic Research Centre as 15 th batch trainee in the year 1971. After successful completion of the training, he joined Nuclear Power Board and was posted at Tarapur Atomic Power Station-1 & 2, Maharashtra which is the fIrst Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) using enriched uranium as fuel and light water as coolant. After undergoing operation authorization training in the plant, he was awarded Junior License Certificate in 1974 and took independent charge of the unit consisting reactor, turbine, generator and associated utilities and control systems. As unit control engineer Shri A.L.N. Rao operated the unit safely and without any accidents. He has handled emergency situations and took immediate action to bring the reactors under safe conditions. Shri A.L.N. Rao participated in the first refuelling operations which consisted of transferring the irradiated fuel bundles from the reactor core to fuel storage pool and loaded the fresh fuel bundles from storage pool into the reactor under 60 ft. of water. He had also replaced the core components which was a challenging task.
Subsequently in the year 1978 Shri A.L.N. Rao obtained Senior License Certificate and took independent charge of the complete plant in shifts. After operating the plant successfully, he was transferred to general shift and held positions as Ventilation Operation Engineer with the responsibility of maintaining air condition and ventilation of the primary and secondary containment of reactor building and other service buildings and as Radwaste Operation Engineer, processing and monitoring the solid, liquid and gaseous radioactive waste to keep the discharge limits well within the prescribed limits.
Shri A.L.N. Rao was transferred from Nuclear Power Board to Heavy Water Board in the year 1984. He closely followed up the project activities of the Captive Power Plant of Heavy Water Plant (Manuguru) being set up at Aswapuram in Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh. He actively interacted with consultants and contractors in finalizing the system packages and participated in review meetings.
Shri A.L.N. Rao was transferred to HWP(Manuguru) in the year 1987 as Operation Manager of Captive Power Plant. He has successfully monitored the erection of equipments and carried out precommissioning and commissioning activities of the Captive Power Plant having capacity to generate 265 x 3 T/hr of superheated steam and 3 x 30 MWe of electricity generation. Startup problems were studied in depth by him as a member of task force and implemented the modification which has improved the availability and reliability of the Plant.
Shri A.L.N. Rao took charge as Deputy General Manager of Captive Power Plant in 1995 and assumed charge as General Manager of the complete Heavy Water Plant (Manuguru) which is the largest heavy water producing plant in India in the year 1988.
Shri A.L.N. Rao was transferred to Heavy Water Board (C.O.) in the year 2003.
At Central Office, he held the positions of Associate Director (Projects/Energy & Services) in the year 2003 and as Director (Energy & Services/Operation) in the year 2004. In 2005 he was designated as Executive Director (projects/Energy & Services) and monitored the physical and fiscal progress of the Projects at Board level. He discharged the duties as the Secretary of the Heavy Water Board. He coordinated aU activities related to export of Heavy Water to South Korea and the Republic of China. As Management Representative for Quality Management Systems as per ISO 9001, he followed up all the activities and obtained ISO 9001 Certificate for Board Office.
Shri A.L.N. Rao has taken over as Chairman & Chief Executive of the Heavy Water Board with effect from 1 st February 2007. |
